Yacht Brokers, Boatshed Plymouth recently visited Cotehele Quay and Mill in Cornwall to list a boat and whilst there discovered a fantastic job opportunity for a wooden boat enthusiast to obtain a hands-on career experience with a unique piece of nautical history! Built in 1899 ‘Shamrock’ is a 57ft ketch-rigged Tamar Sailing Barge, originally used to transport cargoes in and around Plymouth on the River Tamar. She then went on to be used as a diving tender, and salvage barge, before being acquired by the National Trust in 1974, who also own the associated Cotehele Tudor House and gardens. She is now co-owned by the National Maritime Museum, and has been restored to sea-going condition. She is usually moored in her dock at Cotehele, however she does make occasional trips on the Tamar. The adjoining Quay Museum tells Shamrock's story, as well as information about trade on the river, mining, quarrying, and shipbuilding in the Tamar Valley.

Her current seasonal shipwright is due to retire next year, and Cotehele are looking for a replacement shipwright to work alongside her current carer, enabling the new recruit to learn all about Shamrock. The work is seasonal running from April until September three days a week. Experience is preferred, however if this sounds like something that would interest you please ring the property office for more details on 01579 351346, or drop into Boatshed Plymouth’s office to check out the advert on our Boats for Sale display board.

Closing date for applications is Monday 16th February.
