Alajuela 38s are impressive blue water cruisers: a heavily-built solid hand-laid FRP laminate hull, the long, low bowsprit adds to the graceful lines of the boat and minimizes the surface which can be pushed by the wind. She has a 5” square Samson post on bow, stern-mounted rudder with long tiller, the chain plates and rigging are outboard, allowing easy movement around the boat and is safe with double lifelines on sturdy stanchions all around. She has a custom low profile dodger made of wood, fiberglass and lexan and aft of the dodger is a custom bimini that supports four Siemens solar panels. The deck and dodger need attention and repair at this time. However, once given the attention, she has the potential to be restored to a true beauty. There is also a Shade Tree cover for additional protection and to keep the boat cool in hot climates.
The mast air clearance stated is an owner estimate and should be verified by the new owners.
The interior has many custom designed features. Entering via a unique ladder, rather than companionway stairs, the entry to the aft engine compartment is via a door covered with a white board for notes and reminders. The compartment, housing the 40hp Izuzu engine and “Little Wonder” water maker has a board for easy access to all sides, a towel rod and lighting to complete your own repairs with relative ease.
The galley to starboard is complete with Italian marble countertops, a safety bar at the stove, garbage bin, refrigeration and custom storage.
Throughout the cabin you will notice each drawer has a brass number tag for a master storage plan – well thought out!
To port is a custom navigation station with a large table. All navigation instruments and the electric panels are easily accessed, storage drawers below the table and seat, and a storage locker behind.
Forward on starboard is a Dickenson diesel heater, settee with drop down table and custom bookcases and drawers along with storage behind and below the settee. Across to port is also a settee with bookcases, storage behind and below and drawers. Each salon settee converts to a bunk with lee cloths.
Forward of the salon is the main sleeping cabin with a queen size v-berth, hanging lockers, drawers, and bookshelves. The head has a manual raw water toilet, Italian marble countertops and labeled storage cupboards and drawers.
The teak and holly floors were refinished and covered with McKloskey’s gym-floor varnish for a combination of beauty and hard finish for function.

The Alajuela 38 model was introduced when the "world-cruising" boom developed in the early 1970s. The builders designed and engineered a boat that earned acclaim for its sturdy construction, its beautiful and traditional lines, and its sailing characteristics. This Alajuela 38 is the 2nd laminated hull laid by the Alajuela Corp (Costa Mesa, CA) in 1972; however, she was not launched until 1978. The current owners have owned her over 30 years. It took nine years of love and labor to refit her after they purchased her; she was set for cruising in 2000. They returned from their cruising and racing adventures to Mexico in 2005 and it has been used sparingly since.
She is truly capable of blue water cruising: double-ender design, cutter rigged, heavily ballasted with 10,000 pounds of internal lead in the full keel, stern mounted rudder with long tiller and nine sails. Powered by a 40hp Isuzu engine that is incredibly economical, she sports a custom low profile rigid dodger with sunshade supporting solar panels that protects you from the elements while underway or at anchor. The owner who is a self-taught professional cabinetmaker created the gorgeous interior: Danish Modern Teak throughout, Italian marble in the galley and head, custom storage lockers and drawers (numbered so you can create a master storage plan!), custom navigation station complete with electronics and sextant for any situation. The exterior shows wear but the interior seems to be in excellent condition.
